The oft-criticized Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) is due to move closer toward passage when hearings resume in February, according to an announcement posted online late Tuesday by its sponsor, Sen. Lamar Smith (R-TX).

Smith is also the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, which held the first part of the contentious markup hearing on SOPA in December 2011.

That portion lasted 15 hours and barely got through half of all the amendments proposed to SOPA. Smith adjourned the hearing on Friday, December 16, 2011 as the holiday recess loomed. Now that its over, Smith said he’s “committed to continuing to work with my colleagues in the House and Senate to send a bipartisan bill to the White House that saves American jobs and protects intellectual property.”
