Sen. Frank Lautenberg’s (D-NJ) son eulogized his father at a Wednesday funeral service in New York, telling a large gathering of family and public officials that the Garden State’s 89-year-old senator regretted his decision not to seek re-election in 2014.

“Just ten days ago my father was saying ‘You know I really regret retirement,'” said Josh Lautenberg at Park Avenue Synagogue on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. “‘I think I’m gonna go out and tell them I take the whole thing back and it was just a mistake.’ And he was very serious about it. He meant it.”

Forty one Senators and six House members attended the funeral service, according to a White House pool report, including Vice President Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), among other New Jersey politicians.
