The American soldiers involved in burning multiple copies of the Quran last February in Afghanistan will likely face only administrative discipline, not the harsher penalties sought by locals. The punishments may include docked pay or written reprimands, as opposed to summary firing or any further criminal charges.

Eleven soldiers were sent out of Afghanistan as a result of the unintentional burnings, which some members of the Afghan parliament claimed should result in life imprisonment. The office of Afghan President Hamid Karzai declined to comment on the latest announcement.
