Game over. Smartphone users are spending as much time now on social networking apps as playing games, the first time gaming has been rivaled as the top activity on the devices, according to a new report from mobile analytics firm Flurry

Android and iOS owners spending more time overall on their smartphones in the course of any given day, up from 68 minutes per day in 2011 to 77 minutes a day in 2012.

A full 24 of those minutes are spent on social networking and gaming apps now, compared to 2011, when users spend 15 minutes on social networking apps and 25 minutes gaming.

Flurry notes that the numbers indicate that Facebook’s cool $1 billion purchase of Instagram was a savvy buy.
