Fox News’ Shep Smith on Friday apologized to viewers after the network showed live footage of a man shooting himself in the head after ending a car chase. Smith explained that Fox went on a five-second delay so they could cut away if anything bad happened. But it didn’t prevent the footage from airing live.

“And we really messed up,” he said. “We’re all very sorry. That didn’t belong on TV. We took every precaution we knew how to take to keep that from being on TV. I personally apologize to you that happened.”
