Newt Gingrich’s campaign, already essentially over this week after the cash-strapped candidate dumped most of his staff and announced a Hail Mary brokerered convention strategy, may have lost its biggest asset on Wednesday: Sheldon Adelson.
The casino magnate who propped up Gingrich’s longshot campaign almost singlehandedly by donating tens of millions of dollars to a Super PAC supporting him has apparenty concluded the race is all but over.
According to Jewish Journal, Adelson told a group at his Venetian Sands casino after a Jewish group’s conference that Gingrich was “at the end of his line,” although he expressed reservations about Santorum and Romney.
“Mathematically he can’t get anywhere near the numbers and there’s not likely to be a brokered convention,” he explained.
