Speaking for the first time about the stroke he suffered a year ago in an interview published Wednesday in The Daily Herald, Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) said the near-death experience made him “much more religious.”
“I would say that I definitely became much more religious,” Kirk said. “They say there are no atheists in foxholes, and this stroke put me into a very deep foxhole. Yet, that feeling of faith sustained me, so I have no feelings of anger or regret.”
Kirk said he “kept imagining going back to work” throughout his recovery. Now, the junior senator from Illinois is set to make a “dramatic return” to Congress today, according to the Chicago Tribune.
