Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D) thinks all purchasers of ammunition should undergo background checks through the FBI’s systems, he told the Washington Post Tuesday.
“Any one of these people can walk into a Wal-Mart, buy a shopping cart full of ammunition and walk out – no questions asked,” said Blumenthal. He has already discussed the idea with both Vice President Joe Biden, who is heading a task force to make recommendations on curbing mass gun violence, and former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who is helping in the push for sensible restrictions on guns.
There are currently no laws regarding background checks for ammunition purchases.
“I see it very much as a seamless part of a more comprehensive package,” Blumenthal said. “It is a necessary component of a gun violence prevention strategy.”
