Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL), a member of the Armed Services Committee, said Tuesday that the time has come for American military intervention in Syria after last week’s devastating chemical weapons attack there.
“There should be moral outrage over the use of chemical weapons on innocent civilians in Syria,” Nelson said in a statement. “At this point I believe it appropriate to take military action with NATO and our regional allies. Inaction would only lead to greater suffering and instability in the region and would further embolden Assad.”
Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday it was “undeniable” that chemical weapons were used in Syria, while condemning the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
Nelson predicted in 2011 that, after revolutions had deposed longtime leaders in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, Assad would be the next to fall.
