Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) is lucky that he isn’t facing Scott Brown in this year’s special U.S. Senate election in Massachusetts, the former Republican senator indicated earlier this week.

Brown, who triumphed in a 2010 special election to replace late Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA), told Fox 25 that he has little doubt he could defeat Markey.

“Yeah, I do,” Brown said when asked if he could triumph in this year’s special election. “I could beat Ed Markey, absolutely.”

Bay State Republicans tried to lure Brown to run in the race to succeed former Sen. John Kerry (D-MA). Polls have indicated that Markey is the favorite to win over Republican businessman Gabriel Gomez in next Tuesday’s special election.

The PollTracker Average currently shows Markey with a roughly 5-point edge over Gomez.
