If President Obama was worried electoral politics might make negotiating an arms deal more difficult, Rick Santorum gave him plenty of evidence on Tuesday, accusing Obama of selling out America’s basic security by telling Russian president Dmitry Medvedev he would have more flexibility to negotiate an arms deal after the election.

Calling the incident “very disturbing,” Santorum said in Wisconsin that it showed Obama “suggesting that he’s willing to sacrifice American security and willing to sacrifice the security of our allies,” according to Reuters. He added that the implication was “after the election I’ll be happy, I’ll be happy to throw our allies under the bus” and that Obama “whispers don’t worry we’re not gonna defend ourselves or our allies” in the face of Iran’s nuclear threat.

The White House has insisted its committed to the missile defense system that the president was discussing and Obama has repeatedly insisted all options are on the table in preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, including military force.
