Under fire from the Romney campaign for appealing to Democrats in Michigan’s primary while Democratic actvists were simultaneously urging liberals to vote for Rick Santorum as a prank, Santorum’s campaign is downplaying the extent of their outreach efforts.

“The total effort was probably nothing more than a couple thousand dollars,” one aide told reporters on a conference call on Wednesday. Presented with evidence from exit polling that some surprising demographics, including Democrats who strongly oppose the Tea Party, went for Santorum, the aide added that the campaign only sought out conservative Democrats for its outreach efforts.
