Rick Santorum took great pride in his underdog status against the better-funded Mitt Romney, mentioning it prominently in his speech announcing he was suspending his campaign on Tuesday. His staff felt the same way.

“We basically took him up to Iowa, gave him a hamburger and road map and said ‘Go win Iowa,'” Gidley told TPM. “And he did it!”

According to Gidley, “history writers will take a look at that and say what they want about the campaign, but I think it’s a very strong campaign that accomplished so much with so little.”
