Haunted by his 2009 affair in the final week of the South Carolina special election, former Gov. Mark Sanford’s latest ad makes the case that what is at stake in the election is “bigger” than the people involved. The campaign called the ad a preview of their “closing argument” Wednesday.

“Nancy Pelosi and allies have spent more than $1 million to defeat me,” Sanford says in the 30-second spot, speaking directly into the camera. “But this contest is bigger than them or me. It’s about two different visions of how we restore America and reign in Washington spending. We have to get this right.”

Sanford signs off saying, “I approve this message, and humbly ask for your help and your vote.”

Sanford is in an uphill battle against Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch despite the Republican-leaning of south Carolina’s First Congressional District. This ad comes a day after a Democratic super PAC attacked Sanford for his infidelity. The election is May 7.
