The still powerful vortex that was Hurricane Sandy came ashore near Atlantic City, N.J., around 8 p.m. ET, with a barometric pressure of approximately 946 millibars, according to the National Hurricane Center. Landfall came about an hour after the NHC declared Sandy had completed the transition from a warm-core tropical system into a post-tropical cyclone.
The barometric pressure at landfall, if verified, would be the lowest ever recorded in the northeastern United States.
