In the first five months since its release, Samsung’s highly acclaimed Galaxy S III smartphone, powered by Android, has sold 30 million units globally, the South Korean electronics company announced Sunday night. That compares to just 10 million Galaxy S II smartphones sold since its release in 2011.

Samsung’s rival Apple revealed that it sold 125 million iPhones in its full fiscal year 2012, but did not provide a quarterly or monthly breakdown, nor did it detail sales for different models (iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and iPhone 5). Prior to the release of the iPhone 5 in September, Apple in its third quarter sold 26 million iPhones. Following the release of the iPhone 5, analysts expect Apple to sell up to 50 million iPhones for the first quarter of fiscal year 2013.
