Former Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) said Saturday that he currently has no plans to join his son Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) on the presidential campaign trail.
CNN’s Michael Smerconish asked the former congressman whether he would stump for his son during the 2016 election cycle.
“There’s no plans for it,” Paul responded. “We haven’t talked about it so I don’t know what we’ll do.”
“It’s his show right now and I don’t want to distract from what he’s doing,” he added.
The libertarian icon was on hand for the kickoff of his son’s presidential campaign in April in Louisville, Kentucky. He did not speak at the rally, though.
Smerconish also asked Paul, who’s kept company with a bevy of conspiracy theorists over the years, whether his son has asked him to keep his inner skeptic under wraps during the campaign. Just last month, Paul applauded Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s (R) decision to ask the State Guard to monitor the U.S. military’s planned “Jade Helm 15” exercise.
“Now that he’s running for the White House, does he ever call you and say, ‘Dad, you gotta rein it in on these issues. Don’t rock the boat?” Smerconish asked.
Paul said that his son has not asked him to tone it down and still consults with him about financial policy.
