At Sunday morning’s NBC debate, Newt Gingrich continued to question Mitt Romney’s electability, and his ability to take on President Obama.

“There’s a huge difference between a Reagan conservative,” said Gingrich, referring to himself, “and someone who comes out of the Massachusetts culture with an essentially moderate record, who will have a hard time in a debate against President Obama.”

In response, Romney touted his record as governor, including on such issues as illegal immigration — and seemed to take a potshot at Gingrich, as past the prime of today’s political leaders: “I’m very proud of the conservative record I have. And I think that’s why some of the leading conservative voices in today’s world, who are fighting today’s conservative battles, and don’t have any axes to grind, are endorsing my campaign.”

As examples, Romney cited New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.
