Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney continued his hardline stance on immigration in front of a friendly audience of Arizona conservatives at the CNN debate Wednesday night, saying that the Department of Justice should stop suing states and local entities that are taking immigration enforcement into their own hands. He also talked up E-Verify, an online verification system run by US Citizenship and Immigration Services that allows employers to check on the immigration status of their workers or potential hires.
Joe Arpaio, Sheriff of Maricopa County, a national figure on the immigration issue who is currently under federal investigation for promoting “a culture of bias” against Latinos, was in the audience.
