Mitt Romney continues to believe that illegal immigrants should not be provided a pathway to citizenship, a position he took on the campaign trail and which many say contributed to his poor performance with Hispanic voters.

“People who have come here illegally should not be given a special pathway to permanent residency or citizenship merely because they’ve come here illegally,” Romney said during an interview that aired on “Fox News Sunday.” “So I have that position.”

Romney added that he believes immigration reform should pass and conceded that it will take compromise.

Lawmakers in Congress are currently working on an immigration reform effort that would provide a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, a policy a growing number of Republicans are getting behind.
