Rick Santorum answered a question on bailouts by saying that, on principle, he opposed government rescuing some industries. Santorum said he held true to his principle and opposed bailouts of both the auto industry and Wall Street, but said that Mitt Romney wasn’t as consistent. He supported the folks on Wall Street when they needed a bailout, said Santorum, but when it came to the folks in Detroit, he opposed it.

Romney responded by trying to explain the difference between Wall Street’s and Detroit’s situation. Romney said that with regard to Wall Street, he didn’t want to help any Wall Street banks, but he also didn’t want to lose all the banks — a real fear at the time. Conversely, he said, managed bankruptcy was the right choice for Detroit.

Ron Paul’s take was that there is no such thing as good bailouts and bad bailouts. They’re all bad, he said.
