Mitt Romney came close to matching President Obama’s April fundraising haul, bringing in $40.1 million between his campaign and the Republican National Committee, reports the New York Times. The Obama campaign, with the DNC, raised $43.6 million last month.

This is a big improvement for Romney, who raised just $12.6 million in March when the primary was still in full swing. By April, the big donors had come together around Romney. The Romney campaign will announce Thursday that they had $61.4 million cash-on-hand at the end of April, according to the Times.

While the Obama campaign has sunk $25 million into a series of ad buys this month, spending on Romney’s side is coming from super PACs like other outside groups like Crossroads GPS. The Romney campaign itself is generally conserving its money.
