Mitt Romney’s campaign is using his Michigan and Arizona victories to appeal to small donors, describing the wins in an e-mail to supporters as primarily a triumph over President Obama.

“Despite their best — and dirtiest — efforts, the Democrats’ ‘kill Romney’ campaign was a bust last night,” the e-mail reads. It alludes to Rick Santorum’s use of robo-calls targeting Democrats, first reported by TPM, to tie Romney’s top GOP rival to the White House.

“The voters of Michigan saw through the barrage of baseless attacks from Obama’s billion-dollar machine, even with Rick Santorum’s pathetic tag team efforts to recruit liberal Democrats in the Republican primary,” it reads.

Romney’s fundraising operation has been overwhelmingly reliant on big-money donors, a potential problem as he burns through cash at an extremely high rate and his top supporters hit the legal contribution limit of $2,500. This latest e-mail specifically asks for donations of just “$20 or more.”
