The Romney campaign is attacking Rick Santorum, focusing on the number of earmarks he got behind while in Congress. The Romney campaign hasn’t paid much attention to Santorum since Iowa and is a testament to the close race we are seeing in Minnesota, where the candidates are virtually tied and Santorum could potentially take a win away from Romney. In an email that included several articles on Santorum’s record on earmarks, Romney spokesperson Andrea Saul gave the following statement:

“Rick Santorum is part of the big-spending Washington establishment that ran up the national debt by trillions and stuck our grandchildren with the bill. His ardent and passionate defense of earmarks is not something that fiscal conservatives are looking for in our next president. Mitt Romney supports a ‘smaller, simpler, and smarter’ government that cuts spending and frees us from the debt and deficits that politicians like Rick Santorum have created.”
