Ed Gillespie, senior adviser to the Romney campaign, downplayed the importance of the Wisconsin recall election for the presidential election this fall on Fox News Sunday. ” I don’t know at the end of the day how much that’s going to factor into November,” he said.

Gillespie did say he believes Gov. Scott Walker will win and survive the recall, but didn’t want to draw any larger conclusions outside of Wisconsin politics. “I think this recall is about Wisconsin and the reforms that…Gov. Walker enacted there,” he said. “And I think it’s gonna be close. I think he’s gonna win and the voters are gonna reject the recall. I don’t know at the end of the day how much that’s going to factor into November.”

But Gillespie also pointed out that in 2010, Republicans not only won the governorship but also both houses in the state legislature in Wisconsin, signaling that there is some sort of political shift happening in the Badger State.

Walker’s presumed victory, he says, “does reflect what has been a trend in Wisconsin…there’s something going on in Wisconsin and all across the Great Lakes where it is moving away from liberal Democratic policies and toward more reform-oriented Republican policies.” If Walker wins, the statement to ‘big labor’ and unions, Gillespie said, is “you can’t be too greedy and you need to understand that and a lot of these legacy costs that you imposed are due for some reforms and some restructuring.”
