Top Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom said the Obama campaign’s attacks on Romney’s record at Bain Capital is an attempt to distract voters from “his own poor record on the economy,” in an interview Tuesday morning on NBC’s “Today.” To that end, Fehrnstrom called the attacks “the biggest smokescreen since Mount St. Helens.”

“Not every stock we buy, not every company we invest in, turns out to be a winner,” Fehrnstrom said. “But over the long haul, Mitt Romney has had many more successes than failures. He learned from both experiences, and that’s what makes him so qualified to lead on jobs and the economy.”

On Monday, the Obama campaign launched an ad campaign in several swing states attacking Romney and Bain Capital as job-destroyers with interviews from steelworkers who lost their jobs after a Bain-owned plant shut down. On Tuesday, the pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA Action released an ad also featuring an out-of-work steelworker who lost his job under Bain Capital’s watch.
