As Republicans continue their effort to blame the White House for the harsh across-the-board spending cuts scheduled to take effect March 1, the Republican National Committee released a web video Thursday claiming that Obama invented sequestration and even swore to veto plans to avoid it.

The video shows a clip of an interview with Bob Woodward saying the sequester originated in the White House, followed by a clip of Obama in 2011 promising to veto efforts to avoid sequestration in a “balanced” way. “I will veto any effort to get rid of those automatic spending cuts to domestic and defense spending,” Obama says in the video.

As BuzzFeed points out, Obama went on to urge Congress to come up with a balanced approach to deficit reduction with which to replace the sequester.

Text at the end of the video reads: “The Obama Sequester: He was FOR it, before he was AGAINST it.”
