Pushing back against conventional wisdom that the drawn out and negative GOP primary will end up weakening the eventual nominee, Priebus drew on the 2008 campaign as proof, saying that the long Obama-Clinton primary helped Democrats while the GOP primary in 2008 “put American to sleep.”

Primaries make candidates stronger. It forces the media to talk about our candidates. And it keeps the focus on Barack Obama, which at the end of the day, this election is going to be about.

Priebus continued:

“Hillary Clinton won Pennsylvania on April 22,” Priebus reminded viewers. “Here we are in the middle of March, and I just reject this idea of handwringing.”
