Florida Gov. Rick Scott will allow guns in downtown Tampa during the Republican National Convention this summer, according to a letter from the governor obtained by Politico. Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn asked Scott to prohibit guns in the downtown area and some surrounding areas during the convention, including guns carried with concealed-weapons permits.
Scott’s letter says that banning guns in the convention center and at an adjacent “safe zone” is sufficient. “The short answer to your request is found in the 2nd Amendment,” he writes. “[I]t is unclear how disarming law-abiding citizens would better protect them from the dangers and threats posed by those who would flout the law.”
