Texas Gov. Rick Perry has cut an ad in support of Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst’s bid for the Republican Senate nomination, praising Dewhurst’s conservative credentials.

“David’s the one candidate best prepared to make conservative change happen in Washington,” Perry says in the ad. “Don’t let anyone tell you different.”

One person telling Texans something different is Sarah Palin, who endorsed rival Ted Cruz and even recorded a robocall in support of Cruz.

Perry’s own popularity in his state is at its worst point in years and has been steadily declining since last fall. The latest poll in April by the Democratic-leaning firm Public Policy Polling found his approval and disapproval at 39 percent and 53 percent, respectively.

Perry endorsed Dewhurst in April. Dewhurst is competing in a crowded field that includes former state solicitor general Ted Cruz and Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert. Early voting is under way; the primary is May 29.
