Eight-term Rep. Silvestre Reyes lost his reelection bid to Democratic challenger El Paso City Councilman Beto O’Rourke in Texas’s 16th District Democratic primary Tuesday. With all precincts reporting, Reyes trailed O’Rourke 44 percent to 50 percent. By hitting the 50 percent mark, O’Rourke avoided a runoff.

From the AP

The 67-year-old Reyes was first elected to Congress in 1996. Reyes received a rare primary endorsement last month from President Barack Obama. The 39-year-old O’Rourke is an El Paso native who says he favors legalizing marijuana but wouldn’t push for that in Congress.
