A new national poll conducted by research firm Ipsos and sponsored by Reuters shows President Obama leading former Massachusetts Gov. and likely GOP nominee Mitt Romney by 7 points, 49 percent to 42 percent, an improvement from March’s Reuters poll which showed a 4 point lead for Obama. The President’s approval rating is also up to 50 percent in the poll against 47 percent disapproval, which was tied even at 49 percent last month. From their analysis:
In another indicator that the debate this election will center on the economy, jobs and domestic policy, voters are closely divided on the relative strength of Obama and Romney on jobs and the economy, taxes, and immigration.
Obama is strong on foreign policy, indicating recent Republican attacks in this area will be less effective. Currently majorities of voters prefer Obama on the war on terror and Afghanistan policies.
The current TPM Poll Average shows a 1.6 percent lead for Obama over Romney nationally at the moment.
