Former Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) will not run in the Massachusetts special election to fill the seat vacated by newly confirmed Secretary of State John Kerry, according to various reports on Friday.

Brown’s decision opens the Republican field in the race, denying the Bay State GOP their most formidable candidate in years and perhaps their best chance at securing Kerry’s seat.

A poll released last week showed Brown trouncing Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA), the Democratic frontrunner in the special election, while a survey released on Wednesday showed a neck-and-neck race between the two. But both polls showed Brown maintaining the broad popularity that typified his brief stint in the Senate.

Update: Brown issued a statement Friday in which he cited his reluctance to participate in his third Senate campaign in four years and return to a Congress even more partisan than the one” he left only a month ago.
