The Internal Revenue Service not only targeted groups with the terms “tea party” or “patriot” in their titles but also organizations focused on “how the country is being run” and other criteria, according to a pair of news reports published Monday.
Reuters and The Wall Street Journal both published reports indicating that the scrutiny paid by the IRS to conservative groups went beyond what was originally acknowledged by the agency on Friday. The investigations found that the IRS also targeted groups that advocated making “America a better place to live,” as well as organizations focused on “government spending,” “government debt,” or “taxes.”
