A current and a former top IRS official have received threats in recent weeks, in the wake of the revelation that the agency had inappropriately screened and handled applications for tax-exempt status from conservative groups.

An anonymous source who spoke with Reuters said that former acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller had received threats, but did not elaborate on the nature of the threat.

An attorney representing Lois Lerner, the head of the IRS’ tax exempt unit, meanwhile, told Reuters that Lerner has received telephone and email messages threatening physical violence.
