Turkish newspaper Hurriyet Daily News reported on Monday that Syrian forces fired on a Turkish-flagged plane searching for the Turkish military jet downed on Friday. The search-and-rescue plane was not hit and promptly vacated Syrian airspace.

Information on the firing, which took place over the weekend, was relayed to ambassadors and defense attachés of the Arab League, EU and NATO. Prior to the firing Syria had offered to form a joint search-and-rescue operation, but said that the two missing pilots, if found, would need to enter Syria to complete “necessary procedures.” Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said his country rejected the proposal and that Turkey was carrying the operation independent of Syrian efforts.
