National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden used a computer thumb drive to store classified documents regarding top secret surveillance programs, according to a report published Thursday in the Los Angeles Times.

The report, citing U.S. officials, said that the 29-year-old former government contractor smuggled the documents out of an NSA facility in Hawaii and that investigators know how many documents he took and from which server he obtained them.

Additionally, the Times noted that computer thumb drives are “supposedly barred” inside the NSA, although exceptions are made for employees who need them.

“But when you use one, people always look at you funny,” a former NSA official told the Times.
