Beleagured mobile company Research In Motion, the maker of the once-popular BlackBerry line of smartphones, is reportedly gearing up to lay off up to 2,000 employees, or 12 percent of its workforce, according to The Globe and Mail

The reported job cuts are said to be part of a radical global restructuring effort by RIM’s new CEO Thorsten Heins, who is struggling to get RIM to reclaim market share lost in the ascent of Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android line of smartphones. Meanwhile, other employees are said to be contemplating willing departures ZDnet reported on Monday.

RIM may even be forced to take a write-down on stockpiles of unsold BlackBerry smartphones PlayBook tablet devices for the third quarter in a row, the Financial Post reported, citing Bloomberg.
