Physicists are prepared to announce this Wednesday that they’ve gathered proof of the existence of the long-sought “God particle,” the Higgs boson, the Associated Press reports.
Although an official announcement is due on Wednesday, scientists close to the European Organization For Nuclear Research (CERN), the agency leading the search, say that they are fairly certain what will be revealed is evidence that Higgs is real.
Importantly, the announcement will not be that scientists have actually discovered the particle itself, only traces of it.
The Higgs boson is a particle predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics but which has not actually been observed since it was first theorized more than a half-century ago. The particle is the last missing piece of the Standard Model, and would finally explain how all matter in the Universe obtains mass.
