President Barack Obama is expected to tap former Justice Department official James Comey as the next FBI director, according to NPR.
He will succeed outgoing director Robert Mueller, who took over the post just days before September 11, 2001.
Comey, a Republican, served as the deputy attorney general in the George W. Bush administration and threatened to resign over warrantless wiretapping of Americans. Also a highlight on his resume: as the top federal prosecutor for the Southern District of New York, he filed the charges against Martha Stewart for lying about stock trades that landed her in prison.
The White House would not confirm the selection and told NPR that it could take several days before any formal announcement is made.
