The White House and the Environmental Protection Agency have announced new finalized fuel-efficiency standards for automobiles, requiring automakers to boost the average fuel efficiency of American-made cars and light trucks to 54.5 miles-per-gallon by 2025, The Washington Post reported. The new standards would those in place at the end of 2011, which mandated new American-made cars average 28.6 miles-per-gallon, as The Seattle Times pointed out.
GM told The Washington Post that while challenging, the new standards were reflective of consumers’ desire to own more fuel-efficient vehicles, and that the company would “do our best to meet them.”
