Senior editors at Breitbart News asked employees not to write stories critical of President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and White House senior adviser, Jared Kushner, according to a report published Monday by Business Insider.
Business Insider cited in its report two unnamed sources familiar with the matter.
Bannon and Kushner, two of Trump’s closest confidants, have appeared at odds in recent weeks as Trump’s presidency makes its bumpy way toward the symbolic 100-day mark.
Politico reported on Wednesday that Bannon, who was abruptly removed from the Principals Committee of the National Security Council earlier in the day, considered leaving the White House entirely as a result of conflict with Kushner.
Bannon nevertheless told associates he loves “a gunfight,” Axios reported on Thursday.
The New York Times reported on Friday, citing two unnamed sources briefed on the exchange, that Trump told the two on Thursday to “work this out.”
Per the Times’ report, Kushner’s allies complained to Trump about unflattering coverage Kushner received from Breitbart News, where Bannon served as executive chairman before stepping down to work on Trump’s campaign. (A White House spokeswoman told the Times that reports of discord were “completely false.”)
White House chief of staff Reince Priebus held a meeting at Mar-a-Lago with Bannon and Kushner in an attempt to mediate between the two, CBS News reported on Saturday.
An unnamed White House official told CBS News that Priebus “had the two sit down with him to clear the air and agree [on focusing] on the agenda and ending the back and forth.”
Reuters reported on Saturday, citing an unnamed senior administration official, that Priebus told Bannon and Kushner to “stop with the palace intrigue,” and said Bannon and Kushner agreed to “bury the hatchet.”
