As the protests in Egypt escalate, top GOP House members are slamming President Barack Obama for what they say has been his implicit support of President Mohamed Morsi and weak policies on Egypt.

“The Egyptian turmoil stems from the Morsi government’s predictable power grab, which the Obama Administration has been far too accepting of,” Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told Foreign Policy. “U.S. aid has failed to compel the Morsi government to undertake the political and economic reforms needed to avert this crisis.”

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, similarly criticized the administration in an interview with Foreign Policy.

“Unfortunately, the Obama administration thinks it can woo Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood just as it thinks it can negotiate with Iran’s Ayatollah,” McCaul said. “The United States must stand firm on its values and make clear our objectives in the region.”
