Jay Townsend, a spokesman for Rep. Nan Hayworth (R-NY), resigned Monday after a comment he posted on Facebook earned him and Hayworth condemnation. On a Facebook forum in May, Townsend wrote, “Let’s hurl some acid at those female democratic Senators.” One of Hayworth’s primary challengers, Richard Becker, had wondered why Townsend was not fired for posting the comment.

Hayworth commented on the resignation in a statement Monday: “Jay Townsend has offered, and I have accepted, his resignation from his position with my campaign. Now let’s return to talking about issues that really matter to families: job creation, spending restraint and economic development.”

Townsend removed the comments and apologized days after they were posted.
