Rep. Gwen Moore (D-WI) recalled several attacks during her youth in a speech on the House Floor Wednesday while speaking in favor of renewing the Violence Against Women Act.
“Violence against women is as American as apple pie,” Moore said. “Domestic violence has been a thread throughout my personal life, up to and including being a child repeatedly sexually assaulted, up to and including, being an adult who’s been raped,” Moore said. Opposition to the bill this year has “really brought up some terrible memories for me,” including one date-rape attack she described.

The bipartisan VAWA renewal has stalled this year because some Republicans object to new measures that broaden the scope of the programs supported under the law, including, for example, outreach to American Indians and assistance for undocumented immigrants dealing with domestic violence.
