Conservative site RedState introduced Rick Perry to the world, branding him “The Jobs Governor.” However, since Thursday’s poor debate performance they’ve been evaluating their support for the Texan. In an article posted Friday evening, one of their commentators defends him from charges many say hurt him the most among conservative voters in Thursday’s debate: namely, the allegation that he’s too soft on Immigration.
Brad Jackson points out that the governor’s controversial education law requires the child to have lived in Texas for at least 3 years and to agree to pursuing citizenship. Furthermore, only 1% of students enrolling in Texas public schools do so under the rule.
“The likes of Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, and others would have you believe it was a program run amok where these students were defrauding a system, unfairly taking advantage of this status, and ruining higher education for every other Texan” Brad Jackson wrote.
Jackson concludes “the statistics show this for what it truly is, a program that does not punish these students, these future citizens, whose parents came to this country illegally. Instead it helps them become educated, productive citizens of these United States.”
