The latest evidence of Newt Gingrich’s surge in South Carolina comes in the form of a new Rasmussen poll, which shows the former House Speaker taking a small lead over Mitt Romney.

The one-day survey of likely Republican primary voters in the Palmetto State shows Gingrich claiming 33 percent support to Romney’s 31 percent.

It’s another indication that Gingrich is closing the gap in the last days ahead of the vote. Rasmussen’s poll before this week’s debate showed Romney holding a 14 point advantage over Gingrich.

Ron Paul places a distant third with 15 percent, while Rick Santorum picks up 11 percent of the vote. Rick Perry, who dropped out of the race earlier today but was included in Rasmussen’s survey, earns just 2 percent support.
