Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) has seen a dramatic revival to his once-sagging approval rating, according to the latest poll from Quinnipiac University released Thursday.

The survey showed 53 percent of Buckeye State voters approving of the job Kasich is doing — a high-water mark for the Republican in Quinnipiac’s polling. Only 32 percent of voters said they disapprove of Kasich.

For a point of reference, Quinnipiac’s poll in December showed Kasich with a modest approval rating of 42 percent while 35 percent said they disapproved. The first-term governor was in an even weaker position last summer. Quinnipiac’s polls from last May and June each found Kasich with a negative approval rating.

Thursday’s poll also showed Kasich, who has likely drawn a political benefit from the improvements to Ohio’s local economy since he took office in 2011, topping four potential Democratic challengers by margins of six to 10 points in hypothetical matchups of next year’s gubernatorial race. The PollTracker Average chart below illustrates Kasich’s rebound from the low ratings that typified the early part of his opening term in office.
