The prosecutor handling the ethics trial of Arizona state Sen. Scott Bundgaard said Thursday the embattled politician should be thrown out of office.

During opening arguments, the Associated Press reports, the prosecutor told panelists the senator deserves expulsion from his seat because of an incident involving domestic violence.

Bundgaard, a Republican and former Senate majority leader, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor last year after scraping and bruising his girlfriend during a fight on the side of a freeway.
