Former Georgia State Senator John Douglas is calling off his support for Rick Perry in favor of Newt Gingrich, reports the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

“I no longer see a path to victory for [Perry] and have had great difficulties dealing with his staff,“ Douglas said in a Facebook post. “I still like many of his policies and would have no problem voting for him if he is our nominee. Now I am endorsing Newt Gingrich for President and will spend time in the near future explaining that move. Suffice it to say tonight that Newt champions the culture war I believe in fighting and he is a brilliant, very well-spoken man.”

There’s some irony here: Perry’s campaign was made possible by an exodus of Newt Gingrich aides who formed the backbone of his late entrance into the race. But now with Gingrich surging in the polls and Perry scraping bottom, at least one prominent supporter is heading the other way.
